In his last complete book, The Grand Design, Stephen Hawking argued that the ‘grand design’ evident in our universe does not have to be a work of a Grand Designer. Modern science, in particular new physics, provides another, better explanation for that. It suggests that the universe came into existence by itself through natural mechanisms, dictated by laws of physics. These laws not only render the Creator God unnecessary, but forbid any such agent from interfering in the goings-on of the universe.
Hawking’s claim is based on some mindboggling concepts from theoretical physics. This book 1) elaborates upon them in layman’s terms; 2) leads the reader step-by-step to conclusions drawn therefrom by Hawking; and 3) critically analyses his views using works of eminent physicists, philosophers, and theologians. To represent the religious (Abrahamic) view of creation and its purpose, Quran’s narrative has been adopted.
The work carefully demonstrates that Hawking’s view fails to hold up under careful scrutiny and concludes that available scientific data, far from discrediting God, makes His existence all the more probable.
